Shed Wiring in Warrnambool: Power, Lights, Switchboards and Future Use

Planning power to a shed in Warrnambool? Learn what affects shed wiring: cable routes, loads, lighting, sub-boards and future equipment.

A good shed electrical setup should be planned around how the shed will actually be used: storage, workshop, boat shed, gym, farm support, EV charging, tools or future machinery.

The cheapest way to wire a shed is rarely the best if it leaves you short of outlets, light or capacity six months later.

Start with the load, not the outlet count

The electrician needs to know what will run in the shed. Welders, compressors, battery chargers, fridges, pumps, high bay lighting and EV chargers all have different load requirements. Future use matters too.

  • General power points and workbench outlets
  • LED battens or high bay lighting
  • Garage door motors
  • Three-phase machinery or welders
  • EV charging or future EV readiness
  • Outdoor power, pumps or water systems

Sub-board or simple circuit?

Small sheds may only need one or two circuits, but larger sheds often benefit from a sub-board. A sub-board can make isolation, fault finding and future additions easier, especially when the shed has multiple uses.

Cable route and trenching

Underground supply routes need to be planned carefully around depth, mechanical protection, route marking and other services. If trenching is needed, sorting the route early saves rework.

Lighting design for sheds

High ceilings and dark walls need different fittings than a domestic garage. Good shed lighting avoids shadowy benches and makes the space safer to use at night.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run an extension lead to my shed permanently?

No. Extension leads are temporary. A permanent shed supply should be installed correctly.

Do sheds need safety switches?

Shed circuits should have appropriate protection and be tested as part of the installation.

Can a shed be wired for future three-phase?

Sometimes. It depends on supply capacity and how the cable route and board are planned.
